For some, fashion is about the fabric. For Rebecca Mirembe Kisakye, it was about survival. The story of Kids Sewing Club Uganda doesn’t begin in a workshop; it begins in a Senior Four classroom where a young girl faced the weight of being bullied for her size.

In a moment that could have defined her by her insecurities, Rebecca chose to define herself by her creativity. She designed and stitched her own gown for her prom—a dress so powerful it crowned her Prom Princess. That night, she realised that fashion was more than just clothing; it was her source of confidence. It was her armour.

That single prom dress sparked a journey that led Rebecca to become Miss Tourism Buddu in 2022, a milestone that catapulted her into the heights of the fashion world. Under her brand, Rebecca Hill One Couture, she has since dressed over 80 queens for prestigious competitions like Little Miss Uganda, Inter-School Miss Uganda and Toto Miss Uganda, among others. Her designs have travelled far beyond Ugandan borders, gaining international recognition in fashion hubs like Egypt, Malaysia, and Dubai.

But for Rebecca, the true victory isn’t found on a global runway. It is found in the hands of a child holding a needle for the first time. In 2025, she founded the Kids Sewing Club Uganda, a community where children explore and cultivate a love for sewing through intentional, structured training.

“When you give children an opportunity, they can change completely for the better,” Rebecca says. “Look at me, fashion became my source of confidence. When you introduce children at the right age to their skill or talent, you are able to avert certain things like low self-esteem. For me, this is care before crisis!”

At the Kids Sewing Club, safety is the foundation of every session, with age-appropriate tools ensuring that every child, no matter how young, can create in a secure and nurturing environment.

At this year’s Baby and Kids Expo, Rebecca and her team will be in full gear, turning their space into a vibrant hub of creativity. Families can look forward to:

Live Creation: Children can engage in live sewing sessions, sketching, shading, and crocheting.

The Royal Showcase: A spectacular fashion showcase on the main stage, featuring over 15 of the queens Rebecca has dressed throughout her illustrious career.

The Kids Sewing Club is set to be one of the most vibrant corners of the Expo. It is a place where a simple stitch becomes a story of strength. Join us and watch as your child discovers that they, too, can create their own ‘Prom Princess’ moment.
